Flying Carpets

Hamburg's first Moxy Hotel brings together trendy design, comfort, and affordability

Positioned directly at Berliner Tor, Moxy Hamburg opened its doors in September 2020 with striking, inspiring interiors that immediately capture the spirit of the city. JOI-Design's vision was simple yet powerful: set the mood for Hamburg exploration from the moment guests step into the lobby. Raw concrete walls and an open ceiling define the relaxed industrial chic characteristic of Moxy Hotels—but in Hamburg, the floor and ceiling take on a distinctive role, carefully interpreted and designed for this specific location.

Yellow lines guide visitors across the floor like a magnified city map, tracing a journey through the Hanseatic city's distinctive neighborhoods and landmarks. Beginning just around the corner in St. Georg, the path leads directly to the Elbe—wooden swings and casual beach touches transport you to the shoreline. Moving through Neustadt and St. Pauli, you arrive at the open community space where the bar doubles as reception: an oversized container with indirect lighting and rust-colored cladding. The real showstopper, however, are the "flying carpets" conceived by JOI-Design. These sculptural elements nod to the Speicherstadt's vibrant history as the traditional heart of global carpet trade, infusing the space with unmistakable character.

Quieter zones for coworking and community building occupy the rear areas, continuing the geographical narrative: from the bustling Elbe through Eimsbüttel and Rotherbaum to the calm Alster, landing in Winterhude and slowing the pace. Whether checking emails in secluded seating nooks or enjoying a cool drink in the courtyard, guests discover intimate moments throughout. Thoughtful design details—both bold and subtle—weave the brand promise seamlessly through the entire property, creating spaces that naturally inspire smiles.

The 291 rooms embrace the brand's signature "European Guestroom Design," developed exclusively by JOI-Design with Marriott in 2018—a design framework that set the standard for all Moxy hotels. Refined yet unpretentious, the rooms honor the industrial chic aesthetic while maintaining their own understated elegance.
