In nature – with nature

Reimagining a holistic dental practice

Nestled in an upscale residential area on Hamburg's eastern edge, this holistic dental practice sits right where the forest begins. When renovation became necessary, Studio Katharina Born partnered with the practice owner to establish a clear design vision: nature—both the setting and the foundation of their treatment philosophy—would be woven throughout the interiors, creating bright, inviting spaces where patients feel genuinely welcome.

Execution demanded meticulous problem-solving. Extensive refurbishment meant replacing most existing furniture and restructuring the floor plan. Varying floor levels were unified, while a new energy-efficient electrical and lighting system was designed and installed. Patient privacy regulations and staff preferences had to be seamlessly integrated into the design. The entire build had just two weeks. Yet despite substantial demolition and installation work, the project finished ahead of schedule—a testament to detailed construction planning and rigorous on-site management from the project team.

The renovated practice now glows with natural light, wrapped in soft whites and warm earth tones. Natural robinia stems serve as room dividers, while light oak flooring and wooden furnishings extend nature's presence throughout the interior—complemented by expansive views to the forest beyond via the outdoor terrace. Extensive glazing keeps the waiting area acoustically contained while flooding it with daylight and maintaining a visual dialogue with the natural landscape outside.

Thoughtful lighting design suffuses the spaces in warm, predominantly indirect light—a layered approach combining ceiling spots with targeted accent fixtures. The custom-designed reception desk handles all practical workflow demands without overwhelming the space. Similarly, the predominantly white furnishings were purpose-built and selectively accented with curated design pieces. A lean, efficient renovation that delivers striking design impact—a genuine win for patients, staff, and practice owner alike.
