Coworking with Alpine Views

A former mining shelter on Lake Schliersee transforms into a contemporary workspace

The gatehouse in Hausham near Schliersee is a relic of the region's mining heritage. Originally built as a "Waschkaue" – a covered shelter where miners could rest – it now hosts office manufaktur on its upper floor, a vibrant new workspace in the Fünfseenland region south of Munich. Across roughly 450 m², this cutting-edge coworking space marries the character of yesterday with the design sophistication and technical infrastructure of today.

Apc architects shaped the vision for this space, weaving together alpine elegance and industrial heritage into a cohesive design language. Preserving the expansive hall was paramount – it creates a loft-like canvas for exploring the diverse possibilities of New Work. The floor plan alternates between open collaboration zones and enclosed glass-walled meeting pods, while height-adjustable desks, tiered seating, and modular furniture systems encourage both spontaneous exchange and focused work. In partnership with furniture manufacturer Bene, every interior element was carefully selected – earthy tones play against black and white, raw timber rests on matte finishes, plush carpet contrasts with polished concrete, and supple leather meets sturdy felt. Sustainability anchored every product choice. A raised floor system – 60 cm high – runs throughout, preserving sightlines to the Alpine landscape beyond the full-length windows while ingeniously concealing smart office infrastructure in its cavity. A striking black volume positioned in the front third of the space announces the reception; inside, it houses the server room and kitchenette. To the north, a generous terrace opens up – perfect for a sun-soaked break, an evening aperitif, or simply unplugging. An app-controlled booking system gives members seamless access to workspace at any hour of the day.
