Suspended Above the Everyday

Living and working in harmony with nature – a sustainable hillside residence tailored to individual needs

True mountain enthusiasts and passionate athletes, the homeowners envisioned a residence with an invigorating approach – a sanctuary with sweeping vistas. The hillside location is ideal: on clear days, the views stretch across the Swabian Alb to the distant Alps. The home was designed to feel like living between earth and sky, offering space to unwind, recharge, and thrive. Since the residence serves as both home and workspace, it needed to be flooded with natural light throughout the day while providing generous, uncluttered work zones. Equally important: the residents wanted privacy and seclusion, not a home on display – a place to transcend the mundane and retreat to peaceful, secluded corners.

Linie 1 Architects translated the clients' vision and budget into a bespoke, ecologically sustainable home – one that genuinely reflects how they live. The result is a refined, pared-down design with thoughtful, distinctive details. From concept to completion took just 16 months. Built to KfW Efficiency House 55 standards, the residence features motorized blinds for sun control, an air-to-water heat pump, mechanical ventilation, and radiant floor heating. Dimmable LED lighting provides warm, flexible illumination throughout. The hillside setting determined the layout: the lower level, accessed from the valley side, houses storage, mechanical systems, and a garage with workshop space. This concrete base – partially embedded into the slope – provides a solid foundation for the timber-frame upper stories. The living spaces occupy the top floor, where cooking, dining, and relaxation converge in an open, light-filled zone that flows upward into a dramatic double-height cavity above the kitchen and dining area. A guest gallery, finished with polished concrete, overlooks this social hub. The middle floor contains the workspace and bedroom, while a custom dressing room replaces conventional wardrobes. Sculptural, indirectly lit concrete stairs flow seamlessly through the home, demarcating zones of activity from quiet retreats. Strategically positioned windows frame nature in all its moods, while direct garden access from every level invites seamless indoor-outdoor living. A spacious courtyard with seating areas and an outdoor kitchen becomes the heart of social gatherings and sunset celebrations. When weather turns, the sheltered portion of the roof terrace still captures panoramic views and the sensory experience of being immersed in nature.

The homeowner, an interior designer with a sophisticated material sensibility, extended the sustainable timber construction philosophy into every interior detail. Natural linoleum flooring, lime-washed walls, and wood ceilings create a cohesive palette. Each color, form, texture, and material reinforces the home's clear, natural aesthetic while supporting its functional design. The residence is now available for purchase due to the owners' relocation.
