One becomes four

A historic villa is harmoniously complemented by individual new buildings

A listed villa in Bonn's south district with an extensive, park-like property at the forest's edge—this was the starting point for developing four urban villas that Krense Architekten designed and realized. The Cologne architecture firm created a solution for the four architecturally minded clients that maximizes the site's potential while respecting the character of the existing structure.

Only a portion of the existing parkland could be developed—the protected historic tree inventory established clear constraints from the outset. In close coordination with the heritage conservation authority, the architects developed three individual houses arranged in a staggered configuration on either side of the existing building. The historic villa was simultaneously renovated and redesigned by removing a later, non-protected addition and introducing a new building wing that creates a courtyard in front of the structure and provides additional guest accommodations. The two to three-story residential buildings that complement the existing villa on the opposite side are equally distinctive, each featuring individual floor plans. With living areas ranging from 250 to 450 m², they provide ample space for four families with children. As varied as their layouts are, they speak a unified architectural language: through their cubic, often narrow and elongated volumes and white rendered facades, they relate harmoniously to the historic context without compromising their independence. Inside, generous spaces—some spanning two stories—dominate, with window openings on multiple sides ensuring optimal natural light. External roller shades, sliding shutters, and awnings protect the transparent areas from summer heat. Numerous sightlines open up internally and toward the park, which has been subdivided into individual gardens while preserving its spacious overall character. Terraces and seating areas encircling the houses and positioned on upper floors create a variety of appealing outdoor spaces. Interior design employs carefully selected, high-quality materials to establish a minimalist, inviting atmosphere. Integrated LED lighting and sculptural light objects give the rooms an artistic quality.
