Living Under the Roofline

Bespoke, Exclusive Living Across Three Levels

Within a striking newly constructed half-timbered home, this 350 m² residence unfolds across three flowing levels. Hamburg-based interior architect Annette Embert crafted and realized a design concept tailored to every detail. The challenge: honoring the distinctive character of the historic timber-frame structure while simultaneously establishing a refined, contemporary living environment.

A refined staircase ascends from the ground floor entrance to the primary living level, where a singular 180 m² cross-shaped expanse unfolds. Sloped ceilings frame all sides, intimate windows punctuate the walls, and two loggias offer respite. Existing structural columns have been thoughtfully reinforced to define distinct zones within the open plan. Custom built-in cabinetry integrates seamlessly as an understated architectural element. The generous living zone commands the center stage, while lateral "wings" accommodate the kitchen and dining area, a bar, a dedicated workspace, and a snug retreat. Only the guest bath and utility spaces remain enclosed. The kitchen—handcrafted by skilled cabinetmakers following the architect's vision—anchors the space with its dramatic counter, serving as the true heart of daily life. Positioned centrally and visible from every vantage point, the gas fireplace creates a focal gathering point. An intelligently designed audio system by Inklang distributes sound through freestanding and integrated speakers, allowing for both targeted and ambient coverage. Cutting-edge lighting from Lichtja establishes warmth and elegance while visually lifting the weight of the angled ceilings.

The second level—devoted to rest and retreat—extends the same open-living philosophy. A glass-enclosed sauna, dramatically integrated into the spatial concept, becomes a defining feature. A double soaking tub, refrigerator, coffee station, and television complete this expansive wellness sanctuary. Custom-fitted cabinetry lines the sloped ceilings, enhancing rather than fighting the architectural character. Strategically placed skylights amplify the sense of openness. Thoughtful lighting dramatizes the interplay of ceiling planes. The interplay of surfaces and forms creates a singular, memorable atmosphere.

Material selection prioritized both quality and tactile refinement. A restrained, cohesive palette bathes the residence in light and warmth.
