Where Design Meets Craftsmanship

The villa's interior showcases fine materials and thoughtfully crafted custom pieces

This Munich-area family home surprises at every turn: modest in appearance from the street—a single-story structure topped with a hipped roof—it opens into an unexpectedly generous interior filled with distinctive character. Clean lines, purposeful design, and a carefully balanced blend of modern restraint and livable warmth define the project by Munich-based Dönecke Interior & Handwerk. The clients, a family with two grown children, collaborated with Stefan Dönecke on every aspect—from the building shell through to custom drawer dividers and bespoke hardware. The result is a home where craftsmanship and precision are evident in every detail.

Stefan Dönecke brings a dual expertise to the role of designer: he's both a master craftsman and a visionary planner, commanding an intimate knowledge of high-quality interior execution. Upon entry to the 280 m² residence, the marriage of understated elegance and exceptional craftsmanship becomes immediately apparent. A long dark, brushed oak wardrobe greets visitors in the foyer, while a substantial pivot door then reveals the generous living zone with open kitchen and a striking custom fireplace. This striking centerpiece—featuring open black steel shelving, mirror-backed walls, and an integrated bar—functions as sculptural furniture. The home's material palette draws from warm, earthy grays paired with deep wood tones. The XXL-format oak parquet, produced in a specialized workshop, was bleached, lightly smoked, and then soap-finished to create its distinctive surface. A raw concrete lift shaft anchors the house's core, connecting all levels while framing the stairwell. Moving to the first floor unveils the master suite: two bedrooms, dressing areas, and spa-like bathrooms featuring custom leather elements—a bed headboard, vanity desk, writing surfaces—alongside built-in cabinetry with molded fronts. Two additional floors house the children's private quarters and a dedicated fitness and wellness sanctuary. The showstopper: a temperature-controlled wine cellar behind glass, appointed with warm textured plaster, blackened steel, travertine, and dark oak—a perfectly calibrated setting for showcasing and savoring fine wines.
