Blue Room in the Blue Land

The Franz Marc Museum's new extension is an architectural standout.

Blue Space in Blue Country

Expanding the Franz Marc Museum: In late 2023/2024, Munich-based g41 Architects completed an extension in the rear park area of the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See. Set against a stunning Alpine panorama and within sight of the dignified stone museum building, the new multifunctional Blue Room emerged – what architect Wolfgang Kortüm fondly describes as "our turquoise blue & mountain black wooden box." Yet the building transcends this poetic characterization: it stands as a symbol of Franz Marc's artistic vision and legacy—one of Expressionism's most significant figures and co-founder of the legendary artist collective "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider).

It was essential, therefore, that the "blue" theme would resonate throughout the exterior design: a façade of charred wooden formwork paired with recessed turquoise-blue patinated copper cladding protects the solid timber structure, which sits on a light stone base. Depending on the play of light, the museum building shifts between velvety black and anthracite tones with subtle blue undertones. The architecture orchestrates a seamless dialogue between interior and exterior, light and shadow, art and nature – mountain black and turquoise blue. This expansion houses new storage and archival facilities while strengthening the museum's educational mission. The building features a studio and multipurpose space with a front terrace and loggia; a retractable robust sun canopy can cover the terrace as needed. Below, an art storage facility, restoration workshop, and climate-controlled archive spaces provide essential support. Inside, warm wooden surfaces—softwood and oak—are complemented by polished concrete, dark natural stone, anthracite steel elements, and turquoise tiles in the sanitary areas, creating an inviting, intimate atmosphere. The sloped terrain enables convenient delivery access to storage areas and fully accessible circulation for all visitors. The versatile design welcomes diverse programming: the multifunctional studio accommodates weddings, children's parties, and conferences alike. Most importantly, it expands the museum's educational capacity, welcoming larger groups and school classes with ease.
