A Light With Purpose
From Guerrilla Gardening to Guerrilla Lighting
Inspired by a paper tumbleweed that spreads seeds through guerrilla gardening, master carpenter and craft designer Bernd Görtz transformed a group semester project into something entirely new: guerrilla lighting. The result is an exceptional lamp called "roll ins grüne" (roll into the green). Multiple design studies revealed the remarkable atmospheric potential of this distinctive lighting installation. While the recycled natural paper remained central to the concept, Görtz refined the material properties, proportions, and plug-in system for everyday use, and integrated an LED light source. The lamp adapts to any space—resting on the floor, displayed on a sideboard, or suspended from walls and ceilings—creating a uniquely personal effect in each setting.
The lamp's ingenious construction mimics modular origami—no adhesives required, just the elegance of precision-fit connections. With premium, long-lasting materials and the ability to self-repair, "roll ins grüne" stands among the market's most sustainable designer lighting solutions. During production, 15 to 40 percent of the paper's pulp is derived from agro-industrial waste: kiwi, corn, almond, and lavender residues, along with spent coffee and cocoa grounds and leather tanning byproducts. This sourcing creates the lamp's distinctive pastel palette and tactile quality, ensuring each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. At Hamburg's recent Blickfang trade fair, Bernd Görtz earned the design award in the furniture and product design category for this remarkable luminaire.
