Safeguarding & Nurturing
Award-winning "Green Hospital" specialist clinic that fosters healing through thoughtful design
Few building types demand such a delicate balance between operational efficiency and architectural excellence as healthcare facilities. When a|sh architekten and H2M Architekten took on the new specialized clinic in Haar, they faced a complex web of design challenges. The facility serves as a center for autism and developmental language and intellectual disorders in children and adolescents—requiring early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention for developmental disorders and disabilities. Like all healthcare buildings, it needed to function as a sophisticated multi-use complex that serves patients, staff, and operational workflows seamlessly: secure spaces for patients, dedicated treatment and therapy rooms, educational facilities, and an environment designed to actively support health and wellbeing. The design also ingeniously incorporated the basement of a former laundry facility.
Building on this foundation, the architects designed a two-story structure using prefabricated wood-reinforced concrete hybrid construction. The building thoughtfully connects with the surrounding park, framed by distinctive mature trees. "The design balances stillness with vitality, creating a truly social space—architecture that heals and supports," the architects explain. Expansive windows, a play area, and terraces flood the building with natural light, establishing an ideal therapeutic environment for children and adolescents. A vibrant, enclosed courtyard with impact-absorbing flooring offers children a safe space for unstructured play.
The ground floor features a generous, bright, and inviting foyer that welcomes arrivals. The school sits conveniently adjacent. Two nursing units occupy the rear sections of the side wings, while the outpatient clinic, an additional nursing ward with patient rooms, and the day clinic are positioned on the upper floor.
The building has earned "Green Hospital" certification through its efficient, resource-conscious building systems. These include wood pellet heating, roof-integrated photovoltaic panels for electricity generation, and comprehensive LED lighting throughout.
