Individuality Within System

Primary school merges planning and manufacturing efficiency with contemporary design

Modern school buildings demand efficient, economical, and architecturally sophisticated solutions. This is precisely what the new two-stream primary school on Bregenzer Straße in Monheim am Rhein demonstrates. Designed and realized by the Goldbeck Rhein Ruhr Office and School Buildings division, the new building exemplifies how efficient modular construction systems and individual architecture can seamlessly merge.

The primary school building spans approximately 4,900 m² of gross floor area and features, alongside conventional classrooms, a modern single-court sports hall with 800 m² of usable space. The architectural concept divides into two clearly structured building volumes connected by covered gallery passages. These passages provide access to the classrooms, create fluid transitions between interior and exterior spaces, and foster a vibrant, open learning environment. The centerpiece of the school complex is a central timber structure linking both building wings. It houses the main foyer, all-day care facilities, and a light-filled, multifunctional cafeteria with an expansive glass facade. The use of timber as a sustainable building material for the facades and roof structures—left visible—imparts not only warmth and welcoming aesthetics but also ensures a healthy indoor climate. The school's innovative spatial concept eschews traditional corridor layouts in favor of cluster-based organization. This pedagogical model enables cross-class zones, a library, and diverse learning areas that promote individual development. Marina Baack, architect and project manager for the Monheim primary school, emphasizes the importance of these additional spaces: "A primary school is more than functional spatial design. Spaces where children can flourish form the foundation for positive educational experiences." Through industrial prefabrication of key building components, assembly proceeded quickly and precisely on-site. Rather than conventional construction methods, elements were assembled on-site like a modular building system. The result: a construction period of just 18 months while maintaining budget. Goldbeck manager Dirk Hillenhayn summarizes the integrated planning and construction process: "We systematize the invisible and individualize the visible." Beyond this, the building excels in other respects: complemented by geothermal heating and cooling, the biodiversity-enriched roofs—prepared for photovoltaic installation—further underscore the building's ecological ambition.
