If you've driven the A9 south from Nuremberg toward Munich, you may have already stopped at the striking new service station in Fürholzen West. If not, it's worth planning a visit. Even passing by, this bold, dynamic structure commands attention: a hybrid timber building crowned by a sweeping curved roof, created for operator Tank & Rast by Munich architects Allmann Sattler Wappner.

Conceived as the service station of tomorrow—a "mobility hub" that serves global traffic while embracing local and regional character. The expressive roof is the defining element: its dynamic curve unites all facilities beneath a single gesture. Seemingly weightless, the S-shaped floor plan supports a precisely detailed metal roof that traces clean linear lines. Beyond its symbolic representation of speed and mobility, this architectural gesture provides shelter for all the essential amenities. Drawing on regional traditions, the multi-pitched gabled roof anchors the building in its place and landscape. Bavarian charm comes through in a beer garden beneath chestnut trees and a chicken grill. There are also play areas for children and a fitness trail for adults. Inside, an open glass pavilion sits beneath the sweeping roof structure, flooding the retail and rest areas with natural light and welcoming warmth. Enclosed timber structures house sanitary facilities, food production, and staff areas, organizing the internal flow. With an investment of approximately €20 million, the project prioritized forward-thinking solutions: the building generates its own power through photovoltaics and a combined heat and power system, with surplus energy fed back to the grid. The fuel options are equally progressive: beyond standard petrol and diesel, the station offers autogas (LPG), natural gas (CNG), fast-charging electric stations, and hydrogen refueling.
