Clear, Precise, Enduring

A single-family home that strikes a balance between solidity and warmth

Located in a new development area in southern Hagen, this single-family home designed and realized by Schmahl and Gerigk Architects spans approximately 200 m² of living space and includes two garages. The property backs onto a forest and faces one of the project's greatest planning challenges: it is built into a hillside sloping from north to south. The architects had to integrate a 3.5-meter elevation change across the 700 m² lot while adhering to the height restrictions imposed by the building regulations. The result is a timeless residence that integrates naturally into its surroundings.

The Hagen-based architects prioritized a refined formal language, high-quality materials, and carefully curated details. Architect Moritz Gerigk explains: "We opted for two clearly defined building volumes that form the foundation of our design." The compact, two-story main structure features a light gray brick facade, complemented by a single-story base clad in vertical timber. This deliberate differentiation achieves an elegant balance between solidity and warmth. The subtle color play of the facade—hand-finished elongated bricks in cool gray tones with bluish undertones—contrasts with the warmth of the timber. Strategically positioned window openings interrupt the monolithic planes, creating visual structure and clear sight lines while maintaining the building's serene overall character. Notably, the corner glazing on the upper floor subtly dissolves the cubic form, lending the structure a light, contemporary elegance. The setback of the ground floor provides a sheltered entrance, while the rear features a covered seating area. Internally, an open-plan concept creates generous spaces in the living and dining areas with an integrated kitchen. Here too, the balance between solidity and warmth continues. Exposed concrete is paired with plastered surfaces, and natural materials like timber complete the material palette. While the building presents a closed facade to the street, it opens generously toward the garden through expansive windows. The adjoining outdoor spaces were equally essential to the preliminary design, shaped by the property's sloping terrain.
