Living in a Preferred Location
A striking apartment building in Essen-Bredeney
The area surrounding Holunderweg ranks among Bredeney's most desirable residential neighborhoods. Well-maintained apartment buildings create a cohesive streetscape, and where aging structures require demolition, thoughtfully designed new residences emerge that integrate seamlessly with the existing character. Such is the case with this apartment building, conceived and realized by Kamieth Architects of Mülheim an der Ruhr.
Three apartments with east-facing balconies of 130 m² and a 100 m² two-room penthouse occupy four storeys, with the uppermost level designed as a stepped floor featuring a generous terrace. The façade showcases an elegant rhythm of light-coloured clinker brick bands alternating with pristine white fine plaster. The front garden—framed by kerbing, ornamental grasses, and shrubs—echoes the curved geometry of the building's corner. Triple-glazed plastic windows are fitted with motorized blinds and roller shutters on the top floor. The bright, airy stairwell features engineered stone throughout, with lift access to every level. Living spaces are appointed with solid oak parquet, while bathrooms are universally accessible with flush-floor showers. Energy efficiency is paramount: the building benefits from geothermal heating coupled with a heat pump system and underfloor heating. The pitched roof has been converted into an extensive green roof. Existing garages were retained, and a bicycle storage facility was added to the basement. The building opens to the public on 30 June during Architecture Day festivities.
