Transformation for Today

Sustainable restoration of a landmark building that delivers contemporary living

Transforming Heritage into Home

A Hamburg family fell instantly in love with the inviting charm of this 1920s home in the city's north. Sure, it was compact and needed substantial work—but the owners recognized a rare opportunity and purchased the beautiful listed villa complete with garden. To achieve their desired living standards and comfort, the red brick structure required a thoughtful transformation. Even before closing, they brought in the planning office Elbstrand & Mannschaft to evaluate the project's potential.

A thorough assessment of the existing structure revealed the path forward: thoughtfully expanding the property while honoring and carefully preserving its heritage character. What began as a straightforward renovation evolved into a comprehensive transformation. The team managed every phase of the project—from initial planning through final execution—ensuring a holistic, integrated approach throughout construction. The original structure was completely cleared and restored with sustainability and architectural stewardship at its core. Historic details—from hinged shutters to original wooden windows—were meticulously reconstructed. The carefully proportioned extension complements the existing building's form, with a single-story glass conservatory serving as a graceful link between old and new. Working closely with heritage authorities and district officials, the architects designed the addition to sit naturally within the street's distinctive character, which is protected by municipal conservation guidelines. Equal care was given to the landscape: a precisely engineered solution for the excavation pit protected the mature evergreen already thriving in the garden, allowing the new basement-level extension to proceed seamlessly.

The extension's form and material palette draw thoughtfully from the building's historical roots, creating a seamless dialogue between past and present. The design preserves the home's historic character while generously accommodating the family's need for contemporary living space. This transformation demonstrates how sensitive, sustainable renovation and expansion of heritage structures serve a dual purpose—advancing climate goals while safeguarding Hamburg's architectural legacy.
