A School Campus Designed for Wellbeing

Renovation and Expansion of Sports Facilities at Neubiberg Gymnasium

The brief was ambitious: completely renovate the triple sports hall at Neubiberg Grammar School and add a fourth gymnasium. Located southeast of Munich's city center, Neubiberg is part of the Munich district. The Munich-based architecture firm Peck.Daam was commissioned with the project. While the school building itself—dating from the 1970s—underwent renovation in 2013, and had already been expanded in 2003 to accommodate growing enrollment, the sports hall had languished unchanged for decades. Built in the same era and directly adjacent to the 2003 extension, the hall had fallen victim to structural and technical deterioration. Like the school building, it had simply outgrown its purpose, necessitating an additional gymnasium. A library extension designed by Peck.Daam was added in 2003, creating what had become an architectural patchwork. Harmonizing these disparate elements became integral to the architects' vision. For the sports hall renovation, Peck.Daam sought to honor the architectural character of the 1970s while introducing contemporary materials and techniques—creating a distinctly modern facility that respects its origins. Inside, the priority was maximizing natural light and visual connection to the outdoors. After stripping the hall to its structural core, the architects introduced a generous post-and-beam façade with expansive glazing, dramatically increasing daylight penetration. Combined with refined interior finishes and a new timber façade, the renovated hall now welcomes users with renewed vitality. The new gymnasium adjoins the existing hall on its southern edge, with an innovative accessible rooftop. Broad steps ascend to this upper terrace, furnished with comfortable seating and surrounded by safety glazing. A climbing wall marks the staircase's outer boundary. Integrated skylights with integrated seating create dual purpose: they invite lingering and reflection while flooding the hall below with natural light.

The entire complex now presents a refreshed, cohesive appearance—diverse in its components yet unified in spirit. With proven expertise in educational architecture, Peck.Daam previously designed a comparable sports facility for the grammar school in Ottobrunn.
