Care and Living

Daycare facility with staff housing

At first glance, a robust, raw concrete block sits on Garching's western edge—a striking architectural statement. Yet this mixed-use building is far more nuanced than initial appearances suggest. The ground floor houses a four-classroom daycare with expansive windows and vibrant interior spaces. Above, two stories contain ten residential units of varying sizes, seamlessly integrating care and community living.

Designed by Schindhelm Moser Architects and commissioned by Garching as a public facility, the building was conceived with a thoughtful mission: provide caregivers with affordable housing, sparing them Munich's steep rents and long commutes. A sculptural exposed concrete staircase on the south façade provides access, while a play garden stretches behind the structure. The 500 m² of residential space—divided into one- to three-room apartments—features generous windows, balconies, and terraces throughout. The building's volume steps down in three tiers, respectfully matching the single-family homes nearby. To the north, the garden transitions into open meadowland, preserving the site's natural character. The façade combines a porous concrete base with ventilated timber cladding, creating layered, relief-like visual depth. This material dialogue continues indoors: exposed concrete alternates with natural wood surfaces. Finely sanded concrete and the tactile warmth of untreated wood establish the building's dual character—robust yet refined. Interior finishes—matte stainless steel railings combined with galvanized steel, and colored glass panels—further enrich the spatial experience. Throughout the day, these glass elements cast shifting colored shadows across floors and walls, animating the interior with natural light.
