Situated on the Neckar riverbank in Tübingen, Hotel Domizil brings together three historic buildings unified by a thoughtfully crafted interior redesign. The owners envisioned a contemporary yet comfortable retreat—one that honors the existing architecture while offering flexible, modern functionality. Central to this vision was reimagining the lighting scheme to amplify the architectural narrative and create a warm, welcoming environment for guests. To realize this vision, the team partnered with Stuttgart-based lighting design specialists Schatz + Lichtdesign. Their comprehensive lighting concept for the interconnected buildings is immediately evident in the expansive window façade. A striking new transparent cube—housing the reimagined reception and hotel bar—serves as the architectural anchor linking the main structures.

Minimalist recessed ceiling fixtures deliver soft ambient light while strategic optics create intentional visual focal points. Anchoring the lobby is a striking pendant that descends partially into the ceiling plane, defining the relaxation zone around the open hearth while bathing the space in warm, uniform illumination. Strategically positioned surface-mounted fixtures and wall washers echo the vertical composition of Dittel Architects' interior scheme. Decorative lighting fixtures subtly reference the building's waterside setting—hand-blown glass suspended from natural fiber rope adds transparency and reinforces the open, airy character of the space. A delicate linear light element frames the reading nook adjacent to the entrance. The adjoining restaurant and breakfast area glows with daylight, creating a bright, inviting atmosphere that transitions beautifully in the evening, when refined accent lighting establishes a serene mood.

All circulation zones received equal attention in the new lighting strategy. In these interior-facing spaces—lacking natural light—artificial illumination becomes the primary design element. Linear light profiles align with the architectural language, washing corridors with consistent, even light. Precisely focused spotlights create dynamic light paths that intuitively guide visitors through the building's core. The interplay of varied illumination intensities produces striking contrasts, significantly enhancing the spatial experience and comfort.

Throughout the project, energy-efficient LED technology was implemented across all areas. An intelligent lighting control system further reduces energy consumption while automatically adjusting color and intensity throughout the day.
