Seamless Spatial Flow

Modernizing a split-level house in the Taunus brings together

Word-of-mouth recommendations from satisfied clients often lead to compelling projects—and this split-level house renovation is no exception. Here, light and materials took center stage as designraum Schraverus Innenarchitektur undertook a comprehensive transformation that also stabilized the home's spatial experience. The original architecture had an inherent spatial restlessness, amplified by an eclectic mix of wood species, varied flooring materials, and an open staircase balustrade. The central staircase—the house's architectural anchor—created visual fragmentation and movement rather than calm.

To establish visual calm and fluid movement throughout, the staircase balustrade was elegantly enclosed and finished in clean white. A new illuminated handrail now guides visitors through the space, while dark-stained steps create visual depth that subtly marks the journey through the home. Combined with unified flooring, this approach brought coherence to the spatial sequence while amplifying the sense of openness. A seamless, light neutral floor coating now extends across the entire house, replacing the fragmented palette of earlier materials. By removing the wall between kitchen and dining area and eliminating the partition in the living room, the designers created a flowing living zone suited to contemporary living. The kitchen—a vital hub—now gleams with intention. Premium materials harmonize with thoughtful functionality: the kitchen cabinetry is clad in stone veneer, its natural texture and refined detailing contributing to an understated elegance throughout.

Walnut wood serves as an accent feature in the kitchen and a warm framing element in the bath, establishing both luxury and welcome. Strategically placed modern lighting throughout the house sets the emotional tone of each space. Within the bright, open interiors, this carefully layered illumination emphasizes the refined materiality and restrained forms. The bathroom exemplifies this approach: marble-effect surfaces paired with warm light reflected in copper-toned fixtures create an indulgent spa-like retreat.
