Ride the Wave

Europe's largest surfing facility brings authentic beach vibes to Hallbergmoos

Since summer 2024, Europe's largest surf park has been making waves in Hallbergmoos near Munich—and it's already drawing crowds of passionate surfers and curious newcomers alike. O₂ Surftown Muc is far more than a surfing facility; it's an architectural statement where functionality converges with emotion, and cutting-edge technology blends seamlessly with atmosphere. "We set out to create something beyond a surf venue—a gathering place where people recharge, connect, and experience that exhilarating seaside feeling, right here in the heart of Germany," explains Chris Boehm-Tettelbach, initiator and founder of O₂ Surftown Muc.

At the heart of the facility sits a 180-metre wave pool that generates endless swells—just like the ocean itself. Whether you're a beginner catching your first wave or a seasoned pro, you'll find realistic conditions to hone your craft. The reception building sits to the north, serving as the gateway to the grounds. Its organic form mirrors the pool's sculptural curves, establishing the park's architectural identity. The true focal point is this iconic reception structure, crowned by a sweeping wooden roof that rises and falls like a breaking wave across the 180-metre expanse. Designed by Munich-based Maisch Wolf Architects, its dynamic forms echo the raw power of the sea, creating an organic aesthetic that sits naturally within the sprawling 20,000 m² landscape. Every material—wood, glass, and earthy tones—amplifies the design's sense of lightness and fluidity. Beneath the generous roof lie changing facilities, technical spaces, a sun-drenched surf centre, and the venue's gastronomic centrepiece: the "Lookout" restaurant. The name captures a dual purpose: it's not merely a place to eat, but an "observation deck" where diners witness the constant energy of the wave pool. Expansive windows and a waterside terrace transform this view into an ever-present backdrop. Inside, the interior design draws its palette from the sea itself—natural tones, ocean blue accents, and wood and textiles evoking driftwood and coastal pines—creating an atmosphere that's simultaneously urban and utterly serene. What emerges is far more than a restaurant: it's a "living room" for surfers, visitors, and families alike. From dawn to dusk, the Lookout serves up bowls and burgers, snacks, artisan coffee, and lunch for employees from surrounding businesses.
