More Room to Live

A two-family house reimagined as a home for five

For generations, three families shared this home under one roof. When the grandparents moved out of the ground floor apartment, it presented the perfect opportunity to connect the remaining spaces with the first-floor flat above. This transformation required a thoughtful spatial reorganization and a carefully planned layout—one that Beck Architektur brought to life.

The ground floor underwent a dramatic transformation. The original kitchen was opened up on both sides and reimagined as a generous entry hall lined with custom cabinetry. Modern, floor-to-ceiling loft-style sliding doors with matte black steel frames now define the entrance. The former living room now houses an open kitchen anchored by a freestanding island—a place to cook, dine, and watch the magic happen all at once. This kitchen island showcases a striking waterfall design, where the countertop flows seamlessly down the sides to the floor, creating the visual effect of cascading material. Behind the kitchen, a spacious pantry and wet kitchen zone with a second oven provide serious culinary flexibility. From here, the view opens onto the dining area with its substantial wooden table, positioned before an accent wall featuring 3D acoustic panels that enhance both the room's acoustics and its visual appeal. A wood pellet stove bathes the entire cooking, dining, and living zone in comforting warmth.

The ground floor's original bathroom layout was completely reimagined to create a striking guest WC, anchored by bold photo wallpaper. Matt laurel green metro-format tiles in a vertical arrangement frame the toilet and sink, while the remaining walls are finished with smooth plaster in a complementary green tone. A custom walnut cabinet with deep drawers—crafted by hand—provides practical storage. Throughout the ground floor and stairwell, large-format porcelain tiles with a travertine finish now sit atop the existing radiant heating system. Upstairs, the former cloakroom has been converted into a second compact kitchen, complete with cabinetry that maximizes everyday storage. The upper-floor bathroom keeps its original footprint but gains new life through contemporary fixtures and soft rose-toned metro tiles in a matte finish.
