Floating Above Life

A hillside home that embraces modern lightness and elegance

Building on steep hillsides presents distinct challenges, yet it also unlocks exceptional design opportunities. Such was the case with a detached home that Niederkassel-based architect Johannes Nöbel designed for a village nestled between Cologne and Aachen. The idyllic, tree-dotted hillside plot featured a dramatic 13-metre elevation change—a significant topographical challenge. The homeowners sought private retreats and envisioned a thoughtfully stratified floor plan: one level dedicated to their three children, another reserved for the parents' living quarters and suite. Beyond an unobstructed valley vista, they wanted a functional garden set on a single, level plane.

Nöbel's design strategy turns topography into advantage. The narrow yet deep plot is accessed via a short steep drive to the ground-floor garage and entrance. Three stacked storeys elegantly negotiate the elevation, allowing the upper living level to sit nearly flush with an expansive plateau. Here, the living spaces flow seamlessly onto the terrace and garden. The base zone steps back on three sides, but the real magic lies in the material contrast: anthracite plaster anchors the ground floor while a brilliant white façade floats above, amplifying the home's sense of weightless lightness. Wooden framing unifies the fenestration into continuous ribbon windows, while the clean gable roof—without overhanging eaves—completes the contemporary silhouette. A wooden staircase ascends from the garage and entry hall to the first floor, where the three children's rooms share a bathroom, and parents enjoy a modest home-office nook. The second floor delivers the staircase directly into a generous, open kitchen and dining space. The living area with fireplace sits slightly apart, opening southwestward through floor-to-ceiling sliding glass onto the sheltered terrace. The parents' suite occupies the remaining third, featuring a bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in dressing room. Exposed white-plaster ceiling beams define the interior, paired with polished concrete floors and solid wood cabinetry in the kitchen. Large east-facing windows frame sweeping views across the valley and the village nestled below. It's as if the home itself floats above the landscape.
