As comfortable as home
At Hackbarth's in Oberhausen, exceptional food takes center stage.
When Jörg Hackbarth opened his restaurant in Oberhausen 28 years ago, many thought he was mad. The acclaimed chef had spent considerable time working and living in Essen, but Hamburg called. It was a resourceful Oberhausen entrepreneur who lured him back to the region with an exceptional property. The building that stands there today—constructed specifically for the restaurant—has now graced that spot for nearly three decades. Once surrounded by nothing but open fields, the area now hosts the Centro shopping complex and TZU Technology Centre as neighbours. Yet Hackbarth's remains a culinary refuge, tucked discreetly behind protective greenery. The kitchen delivers international and contemporary cuisine, consistently refined and deeply appreciated by a devoted clientele. A talented young team keeps pushing creative boundaries with fresh ideas.
A signature red door—a fixture since the beginning—welcomes guests into Hackbarth's. Inside, Mediterranean warmth envelops the space: sun-kissed tones, thoughtfully appointed tables with cushioned seating, and an array of pendant lights in varied sizes and colours dancing overhead. Two terraces, accessible through expansive doors, extend the dining experience when weather permits. What started as a private event room has evolved into one of the restaurant's most beloved spaces. Book-adorned wallpaper, a welcoming fireplace nook, and a striking chandelier create the intimate feel of a residential living room. The entire interior bears the distinctive touch of Ulrike Herr-Krebs from Interni in Essen—a trusted friend of the house who understands not just how the proprietor thinks, but brings professional expertise in design and décor to every detail.
