The Façade as Brand Ambassador

A striking new development and innovation centre in Halfing marks an architectural turning point

With its new technology and innovation centre, Profol—a Bavarian specialist in polypropylene films and lightweight composites based in the Rosenheim district—has achieved a notable architectural milestone. Designed and realized by TKEZ Architects from Munich, the new ensemble seamlessly integrates research, development, and communication in an inspiring setting. The project began with a newly acquired site, located just steps from the company's original headquarters. Rather than demolish and rebuild from scratch, the architects crafted a visionary strategy: preserving the existing structures while reimagining their purpose. The expansive warehouse and aging front building were thoughtfully transformed, with the hall now housing state-of-the-art laboratory and testing facilities that position it as a forward-thinking research and development hub.

The result is a striking, three-storey building whose façade design is more than just a shell: it tells the story of the company. Inspired by the wafer-thin strips of film production – the core business for which Profol received the German Sustainability Award in 2020 – TKEZ developed a lightweight, dynamic slat system. Twisted, ribbon-like elements shade the large south-west glazing, improve the energy balance and give the building an unmistakable silhouette. The slat guide continues around the existing hall, creating a harmonious overall picture. The motif of the light ribbons continues inside: light, softly falling curtains along the rounded glass partitions divide the work and access areas, while the central core is enveloped in a perforated metal skin whose gentle waves echo the swing of the curtains. As a sculptural centrepiece, a spiral staircase made of steel stringers only 12 millimetres thick connects the three floors.

The floor plans are designed for flexible collaboration: team areas alternate with meeting islands and open communication zones. New developments can be tested quickly in the immediate vicinity of the laboratory area – short distances accelerate the innovation process, as the centre is connected to the main building via a gently curved, weather-protected connecting passageway. The highlight is the "Profol Kitchen" – an open meeting place for informal exchanges. In addition, a green courtyard between the new and existing buildings and a spacious roof terrace on the second floor invite visitors to pause and relax.
