Art in the Office

A textile installation brings architecture, nature and thought into a sensory dialogue

The extraordinary office artwork “Flying Thoughts” has recently transformed the conference room at the engineering firm Cadfem in Grafing into a space for reflection, emotion and exchange. The textile installation invites visitors to let their thoughts wander and open up new perspectives. The work was created through close collaboration between the Berlin-based designer Mareike Lienau, founder of Lyk Carpet, and the interior designer Britta van Mehren.

The two created a large-scale installation made of hand-knotted wool for the art-loving company, bringing atmosphere, perception and architectural clarity into a sensory dialogue. Lienau has been offering a contemporary interpretation of the Tibetan art of knotting for over 15 years, whilst van Mehren develops bespoke interior concepts with a keen sense of materials and space. Their joint approach centres on the dialogue between people, materials and heritage – underpinned by precision craftsmanship and aesthetic clarity. The starting point was a conscious experience of the space: inspired by the light-flooded architecture and the undulating garden, an organic, floating composition emerged that symbolically brings the outdoors indoors. Abstracted leaf-like forms provide a soft counterpoint to the austerity of the timber frame structure and translate sustainable working practices into a poetic design language. The installation is complemented by textile objects and sculptural pouffes, which functionally expand the design concept. Colour gradients ranging from natural tones to accentuated contrasts create depth, movement and a tangible visual texture.
