Adding Colour to Everyday Life
Alicia Wiedemann crafts ceramics in constantly evolving hues
For Alicia Wiedemann, life without clay and creative chaos is practically unimaginable. The trained educator sought a creative counterbalance to her day job and discovered it through pottery. In January 2022, everything started in a modest kitchen corner—handcrafted bowls and cups initially for herself, friends, and family. The response was so enthusiastic that by September 2022, Alicia Wiedemann had launched her own label, Alicia Ceramics, and relocated from her home kitchen to a studio space in Stuttgart's west end.
There, she crafts cups, vases, bowls and functional art that brings vibrancy to any table. A native of Neu-Ulm, Wiedemann draws inspiration from the world around her—travels, natural landscapes, even the everyday rhythms of a bus commute. Her creative process begins on paper, where she sketches initial concepts before bringing them to life at the wheel. It's a dynamic journey where ideas continue to evolve through each stage: throwing, trimming, firing, and glazing. New thoughts emerge naturally throughout, often steering the final piece in unexpected directions. This unpredictability is precisely what captivates her as a designer. Her glazing palette showcases bold, vibrant hues with constantly fresh combinations. When selecting clay, she's deliberate about avoiding fireclay additives—keeping the material soft and workable throughout the throwing process. Her work has caught the attention of Stuttgart's dining scene, with restaurants and cafés now incorporating her ceramics into their daily operations. For those inspired to try pottery themselves, Wiedemann regularly conducts hands-on wheel-throwing workshops at her studio.
