Creating Shade with Trees

A Sanctuary of Tranquility in the Heart of the City

Lush greenery greets visitors the moment they step into this garden—a tranquil oasis that emerges instantly from the urban bustle beyond. This mature garden was reimagined and restructured into three distinct zones, anchored by established trees that frame the entire composition. Garden designer Christiane von Burkersroda orchestrated the transformation, bringing her unique vision to the project. After earning her degree in mechanical engineering and spending years in the engineering field, she made the bold transition to garden design and founded her practice, CvB, in 2010. Her work has garnered multiple awards, and this private Munich residence stands as a testament to her empathetic approach and refined expertise. The three-zone layout became the guiding principle for all planting decisions. First comes the dining terrace nestled near the kitchen—a covered space where the sociable owners frequently entertain. Shelter from the elements was essential, and a slatted pergola delivers both shade and architectural grace. The second zone offers a more intimate retreat: a lounge-like space for quiet conversations or solitary moments with a book. The third area reveals a more enchanting character, cradled beneath the verdant canopy of four sweetgum trees. A Japanese maple provides a subtle screen for the dining zone, while globe maples mark the water feature's boundaries. Mature specimens—including a graceful weeping willow—edge the property, preserving its established character. Though the owners initially envisioned a pool, the designers wisely opted instead to preserve the garden's generous proportions; at approximately 380 m², a pool would have fractured the spatial flow. Instead, an elegant water table became the focal point—a sculptural element integrated into a block of polished Nero Assoluto. Multiple water bubblers create a soothing soundscape that anchors the garden's meditative mood. The natural stone block serves as a visual anchor, visible from every vantage point, while soft grasses provide textural contrast against its geometric presence. The planting scheme embraces a restrained palette dominated by verdant tones. White flowering specimens, hydrangeas, and Solomon's seal introduce seasonal punctuation, while autumn's warm foliage delivers a luminous finale. Despite its comprehensive redesign, the garden exudes timeless sophistication—rooted, established, and gracefully composed.
