A Kindergarten Designed Your Way
Stadtwerke Solingen brought its vision to life with a custom modular daycare concept
In just ten weeks, a four-group daycare center transformed into a bright, welcoming space: the 80 young "Solingen Energy Dwarves" now enjoy ideal conditions for play and learning in this modular building designed by Stadtwerke Solingen. Set within a spacious garden plot, the facility makes an immediate impression with its fresh, friendly character. The two-story structure features a flat roof, clean white plaster façade, and striking green accents drawn directly from Stadtwerke Solingen's corporate identity. A charming landscape mural brings the theme to life, populated with playful, colorful dwarfs.
Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the interior with natural light, complemented by coordinating green wall accents throughout. Extended roof and wall sections deliver dual benefits: robust weather protection and optimal shading that keeps rooms naturally cool during summer months. The heart of the facility is a generous central play corridor, surrounded by group rooms of approximately 47 m² each—plus adjacent support spaces, cloakrooms, storage, and sanitary facilities. The entire project—from commission to completion—took just five months, thanks to Alho's expertise in modular construction. The team adapted their proven kindergarten floor plan to match the site's unique conditions and the client's specific needs. Notably, the design also fulfills the educators' vision for semi-open childcare, accommodating mixed-age groups of children ages two to six.
