A Confident Statement
A striking office and commercial building has emerged near Limbecker Platz in Essen
For several months now, the ADAC Centre in Essen has called a striking new building home—modern, functional, and ideally positioned in the heart of the city with excellent transport connections. ADAC North Rhine-Westphalia invested roughly 15 million euros in this new flagship location, with accessibility and an inviting design at the forefront of every decision.
For architect Wolfgang Rommelfanger of Aachen, who led the design vision, accessibility was just the beginning. The building sits on a corner lot at Nordhofstraße/Segerothstraße, directly adjacent to the striking black glass complex of the Funke Media Group (completed early 2019) and mere steps from Limbecker Platz. This prominent setting demanded a bold architectural response. The location tells a compelling story: the University District—known as "grüne mitte Essen"—has undergone a remarkable transformation from abandoned industrial land into a thriving mixed-use neighborhood where urban living seamlessly mingles with office and commercial spaces. The ADAC Centre stands as an elegant counterpoint to its glossy black neighbor, capturing the spirit of this forward-thinking urban evolution.
The design speaks through contrast. Where the Funke building commands in black, the ADAC Centre responds in near-white—a sophisticated façade of predominantly white exposed concrete parapets and elegantly framed grey windows. Completing the composition, a striking yellow band traces the ceiling line of the ground floor, while bold signage ensures visibility from every approach to the site.
Spanning approximately 2,000 m² across five floors, the building also features a basement garage with 41 parking spaces. On the ground floor, rhythmically spaced concrete columns create a striking visual rhythm while supporting the structure above. Set back slightly, a continuous glass façade invites transparency and offers passersby a glimpse into the vibrant ADAC Centre. This public-facing level (750 m²) houses the shop, travel agency, and café lounge. A playfully cantilevered corner creates an unexpected urban pocket—a small terrace furnished with plants and seating that offers a quiet retreat in the heart of the city. Floors one through four each provide approximately 750 m² of flexible office space. The client occupies the first floor, with the remaining floors available for lease as interiors are customized for future tenants. The fifth floor, designed as a recessed storey, lends the building an airy elegance while delivering sweeping 360-degree views across and beyond the city. Upon completion, this approximately 360 m² space will welcome the Nürburgring eSports Lounge.
