Adaptive Spaces
Transforming an open-plan office into a flexible executive suite
The interior architects at blocher partners in Stuttgart recently completed a compelling transformation project for a financial institution. The challenge was ambitious: convert an open-plan office into a flexible space that would serve as temporary executive headquarters during renovations while maintaining full operational continuity—and then, with minimal reconfiguration, transform it into an additional conference center to address internal room-booking constraints.
The transformation unfolded over four months of intensive planning, executed flawlessly while the building remained fully operational. The interior architects crafted a visionary concept—one that seamlessly balances professional elegance with functional intelligence. Across 3,200 m², the redesigned space now supports the way people actually work: fostering concentration, collaboration, and private conversation in equal measure. The layout centers on generous public areas—a welcoming reception with lounge seating, a 22-person conference room, four breakout meeting spaces, and dedicated office suites—supplemented by updated facilities and pantry areas. A particularly nimble addition: the integration of a full catering kitchen, woven into the project without missing a beat. Every design choice was made with longevity in mind. Durability and refined quality anchor the entire concept, expressed through a sophisticated material palette: pigmented white oak, black and white marble, and textiles in carefully calibrated grays, blacks, and blues. The aesthetic deliberately restrains itself—clean lines and considered proportions create an atmosphere of clarity and focus. Sightlines, natural and artificial light, and material combinations work in concert to reinforce this calm, purposeful mood. To translate this vision into reality, the architects created bespoke material boards and design guides for each office, transforming abstract concepts into tangible choices. This approach bridged personal preferences with the larger spatial narrative—a design that honors both individual identity and collective vision. Technically, the floor is fully equipped for tomorrow: expansive monitors, acoustic wall treatments, and premium camera and audio systems ensure seamless communication, with infrastructure already in place for future use as a conference center. The result is a workspace that proves something essential: current needs and future possibilities can thrive together when design excellence leads the way.
