Bags with History

Clea Günther and Tanja Stetter transform old sails into something new

Fashion and graphic designers Clea Günther and Tanja Stetter craft one-of-a-kind beach bags from reclaimed sails. The vision started simply: they wanted a spacious beach bag that combined lightness with durability, while meeting their own exacting design standards. Old sailcloth proved the perfect choice—a material rich with maritime history that embodies the spirit of freedom and adventure.

The early designs sparked such enthusiasm among friends that Clea Günther and Tanja Stetter launched their own label, Sii Bags, in 2015. Today, their Stuttgart Heumaden studio produces bags in various formats, each one handcrafted and completely unique. Every piece carries the patina of its source—discarded sails that have weathered the open ocean. No two bags are identical; each bears witness to different maritime adventures, with seams that vary based on the specific sail used. This approach breathes new life into old materials while challenging throwaway culture—a philosophy firmly rooted in the upcycling movement. The sailcloth bags are generously proportioned and surprisingly versatile. Depending on the model, they feature a removable inner pocket for essentials like keys, wallets, and phones. Built to last yet lightweight enough to pack easily, they're as suited to everyday use as they are to travel. Beyond their signature beach bags, Sii Bags also creates smaller pieces—practical shopping bags and compact cosmetic pouches, all crafted from the same distinctive sailcloth.
