While this project lacked historic building designation, renovating a space that had sat vacant for three decades in the garden level of a 1904 structure presented Merakitects Studio with unexpected complexity. The design team, responsible for both the concept and full project execution, would face a series of unforeseen challenges.

Lvate Face Aesthetics, a clinic specializing in minimally invasive treatments, was the client—and a long-standing partner of the architecture firm since its inception. Joint workshops fostered a collaborative approach to concept development, ultimately leading to this Düsseldorf commission. From day one, the heritage building presented serious structural challenges: inadequate waterproofing on the left facade required opening up the sidewalk to install new cove flashing. Unprotected pipes running overhead to the upper floors posed a fire code violation—a problem solved through the installation of nearly 60 fire barriers across the approximately 200 m² space. Additional complications included a compromised drainage system, uneven flooring requiring leveling, and insufficient wall assembly. The limestone walls lacked mineral plaster, necessitating removal of old layers before applying fresh lime plaster. The design concept centered on crafting a sanctuary of calm—a deliberate retreat from the city's relentless pace. Since the garden-level location receives limited natural light, the architects used pale tones to infuse the rooms with brightness and spatial flow. Original wooden windows and entrance doors were preserved and restored, while a new patio door was added to match the existing fenestration. Bespoke cabinetry became a design focal point, featuring premium materials, design classics, natural stone, and marble. Technical systems received equally meticulous attention: DALI lighting controls and a discrete climate system integrated into suspended ceilings provide independent climate control. The design phase spanned three months; construction extended to seven months due to unforeseen site conditions. Today, Lvate welcomes clients in an elegant riverside Düsseldorf setting where historical authenticity and contemporary design converge in perfect balance.
