Colour as a Guide

Finding Direction in a Duisburg Health Centre

Colours have an effect on human well-being. They also provide orientation and serve as signposts in public spaces, such as in healthcare facilities, doctors' surgeries, therapy and care centres, and even car parks. These are areas in which certified colour consultant Nathalie Pagels is often called upon – ideally during the construction phase, but also afterwards when it comes to optimising existing structures. An example of the latter is a health centre in Duisburg, for which the colour expert was asked to develop a barrier-free colour concept with a guidance system.

The building accommodates 14 different medical specialties across four floors. During the initial site visit, it became clear that the previous design relied solely on signage to direct visitors to their destinations—a recipe for confusion. The clients identified several critical challenges: poor wayfinding, indistinguishable zones and floor levels, a sense of unease, and architectural features that complicated navigation. The colour consultant approached this complex challenge methodically, beginning with a comprehensive brief to understand the building's use, the needs of patients and staff, and the vision for improvement. The resulting colour strategy with integrated wayfinding system delivers an environment that is both welcoming and composed, while maintaining a professional presence.

"Through colours and themes inspired by nature, visitors always know exactly where they are," notes colour consultant Nathalie Pagels. The design meets accessibility contrast standards while making each zone and floor instantly recognizable. The waiting areas feel warm and reassuring, each with its own distinct character. The overall atmosphere is contemporary yet timeless—avoiding fleeting trends and advancing the growing imperative of sustainability. Existing architectural elements were thoughtfully integrated, now sitting comfortably within the new aesthetic. The warm wood tones of the durable designer flooring in the wide, generous corridors add to this sense of comfort. Strategic wall breaks and recesses define intimate seating clusters and waiting zones throughout. Varied furniture arrangements and colour palettes further reinforce spatial orientation, creating natural gathering spaces that feel intentional and welcoming.
