Rural Metamorphosis

A former riding stable in Meerbusch reborn as light-filled living space

New animal welfare regulations governing stable sizes rendered the historic horse stables in this protected three-winged courtyard complex obsolete. The owner envisioned transforming them into residences while carefully restoring the original building structure. Engels architektur from Düsseldorf embraced this vision with particular commitment: preserving the traditional exterior and load-bearing framework while introducing generous, light-filled interiors.

Working closely with the heritage preservation authority, the architects created two spacious residential units—160 and 180 m² respectively—spanning two floors within the former stables, extending to the barn's apex. Entrances face outward to the courtyard perimeter, safeguarding the active riding operations while establishing a distinctive "house-within-a-house" character. To flood interior spaces with daylight, a section of the adjacent barn was strategically dismantled. The remaining portion now functions as a covered terrace—a sheltered outdoor extension offering residents views across neighboring fields. Transparent glass blocks integrated into the terrace roof illuminate both the terrace itself and the north-facing interior spaces with natural light. Southward, toward the courtyard, expansive openings forge a visual dialogue with the riding stable, fostering an open, welcoming ambiance. The ground floor accommodates flowing open zones for cooking, dining, and living, while the upper level provides intimate private retreats. One unit features a central utility core anchoring the ground floor—a functional nexus housing the staircase, guest bath, and laundry room. The original cap ceiling and steel framework were meticulously restored and prominently displayed. Throughout the attic, the barn's extraordinary timber roof structure remains visible, a testament to its heritage. Warm, natural materials throughout establish a harmonious spatial atmosphere. An 80 m² mechanical room in the adjacent barn houses a complete pellet heating system and storage. This new system now centrally heats all three former rental apartments and the farmhouse—replacing the dated oil heating that once served them.
