Clear Perspective & Bold Vision

A University Senate Hall That Fosters Communication and Identity

When grüningerarchitekten redesigned the Senate Hall for Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da), they realized an ambitious vision: create a space that balances representation, flexibility, and cutting-edge technology. Working closely with specialized planners and the university's operations team, the architects seamlessly integrated all technical systems into walls and ceilings—virtually invisible, yet fully functional. At the heart of the design sits a modular conference table with rolling, foldable segments and mobile storage solutions, enabling everything from formal senate meetings to informal lounge conversations. The result is a thoughtfully zoned space where furniture placement frames the panoramic Rhine-Main vista, fostering a communication culture that feels both purposeful and open.

The color and material palette quietly echoes h_da's corporate identity and the eut+ university network without overwhelming the space. Working with the university's communications team, the architects crafted a refined, understated atmosphere—one that feels calm and considered. The outcome is striking: a room that doesn't just function beautifully, but crystallizes the institution's values at its core—with quiet intention and lasting impact. The senators themselves have been vocal in their praise, particularly highlighting the superior acoustics, the reimagined table layouts, and the lounge area, which they say have sparked genuinely new ways of communicating. Chancellor Thomas Bartnitzki put it best: "This Senate Hall has become a true anchor point for institutional identity."
