Adaptive Spatial Sculpture

A refined new building that combines architectural precision with adaptable interior spaces

Situated at the edge of a new residential development with mixed single-family and semi-detached homes, this 600 m² plot belongs to a young couple seeking their dream home. The location captivates with its southern green space and panoramic views toward the rolling hills and Niederalfingen Castle to the northwest. Beyond cost-conscious planning and implementation, the owners wanted a home with flexible interior spaces that could adapt to their evolving needs over time.

Kayser Architects masterfully leveraged the site's sloping topography in designing this three-storey residence. Toward the street, the building presents itself boldly with all three floors and a striking cantilevered midsection; toward the south, it quietly nestles into the hillside. With a living area of 285 m², the home is accessed through a dramatic cantilevered entrance featuring a cloakroom and service spaces. The upper floors open exclusively south and north, creating seamless transitions to expansive outdoor terraces. The eastern and western gable ends remain solid, emphasizing the home's archetypal sculptural presence. This spatial design philosophy extends throughout the interior.

The living and working areas flow across the ground floor in open-plan configuration, while the private upper-floor suite with bedrooms steps out onto roof terraces, framing compelling views of the surrounding landscape. A centrally positioned single-flight staircase of exposed concrete links all levels—a striking architectural statement in its own right. As a solid construction, the exterior expresses restrained elegance through varied plaster finishes, expanded metal accents, and wood-aluminium windows with textile shading. Material choices intentionally recede before the building's sculptural form. Inside, raw exposed concrete ceilings and polished screed floors reinforce this design honesty. Fine spruce woodwork, soft textile accents, and muted tones create a warm, inviting interior that balances refinement with lived comfort.
