A Compelling Rhythm

Extension Building for Human Genetics Research, Clinical Practices, and Laboratories – Open and Welcoming

Arranged in an L-shape, this three-story expansion complements the existing structure and, together with it, creates a building complex centered around a new courtyard. The integration of old and new has resulted in a distinctive and powerful urban landmark. Inside, the facility's various functional areas—spanning all organizational levels of the human genetics research, sequencing diagnostics, and treatment operations—are efficiently connected through a circular circulation system. This encompasses clinical practices and treatment rooms as well as laboratories and offices. DNA sequencing determines the order of the four chemical bases that make up a DNA molecule. The resulting sequence data reveals whether a gene contains variations that could lead to disease.

Balancing the company's high-tech operations with a welcoming, patient-centric environment, Dannien Roller Architects + Partners created bright, open spaces that maintain appropriate privacy. Warm materials and thoughtfully selected colours create an inviting tactile experience that conveys genuine care for both patients and staff. Team zones—complete with kitchenettes, lounges, and a cafeteria—are scattered throughout the building like pearls on a string, their striking red colour distinguishing them from the overall harmonious palette. These vibrant hubs serve as identity-anchoring community spaces within each departmental area. A newly designed central staircase threads these "pearls" together, its red handrail functioning as a visual ribbon that reinforces the spatial logic and coherence of the entire complex.

The architects embedded the company's mission into the building's facade design: mirroring the DNA double helix, modular facade elements wrap around the flexible, core-integrated reinforced concrete structure. The wooden modules echo the language of sequencing itself. With its distinctive rhythm, the building complex announces the arrival of Tübingen's new Cyber Valley research park.
