Element of surprise

The designers proposed enriching the open-plan spaces with warm accent tones and natural materials.

"Understanding your client's personality, needs, and aspirations is essential," explains Yannick Zimmermann, describing the foundation of their approach. The entrepreneur had chosen to "play it safe," opting for an austere minimalist palette. Clean lines, neutral surfaces, and a restrained scheme of whites, blacks, greys, and cool tones dominated. Lighting served purely functional purposes. The designers proposed introducing warmth and authenticity through rich accent colours and natural materials throughout the open-plan spaces. Recognising the client's subtle preference for understated, earthy tones, they identified cognac as the perfect accent—warm without overwhelming. An iridescent chenille sofa, adorned with custom-crafted cushions from their atelier, now anchors the ground floor living area, both visually and emotionally. A silk, Tibetan highland wool, and nettle fibre tumbi rug grounds the space with depth and tactile warmth. The large television seamlessly integrates into a bespoke wooden slat wall—a carpenter's precision execution of the designer's vision—concealing the sound system and all associated cables. Dark walnut tones bring both modernity and natural warmth to the backdrop. A commissioned artwork in complementary hues commands the largest wall above the fireplace, becoming a focal point. The sofa arrangement now radiates comfort and has become the cherished gathering spot for the homeowner and her dog. The kitchen underwent its own transformation: the original work block was reconfigured, with a custom 2.60-metre walnut dining table replacing what was removed. Cognac-toned, hand-stitched leather chairs on blackened steel frames create inviting spaces for lingering. Throughout, the designers orchestrated a lighting scheme that flows across all rooms with carefully considered variations. The striking hallway—six metres high, seven metres long, three metres wide—presented acoustic challenges with its bare concrete surfaces. Acoustic wallpaper paired with a large-scale acoustic art installation on the opposing wall resolved the issue elegantly. Sculptural lighting fixtures, playing with both curved and angular geometries, cast atmospheric accents throughout, crafting a refined and harmonious environment.
