Grasbrook: A New Urban District
Envisioned as a verdant peninsula between the Norderelbe and Moldauer Harbour, Grasbrook will emerge as a compelling new neighbourhood and cherished recreational destination.
Grasbrook rises opposite HafenCity on the Norderelbe's southern shore, establishing itself as Veddel's progressive new western neighbour. The award-winning vision from Herzog & de Meuron and Vogt Landscape Architects articulates a comprehensive urban and landscape strategy for the district—one that prioritizes accessible housing across all demographics, forward-thinking employment opportunities, and dynamic public spaces. The master plan pursues an ambitious goal: to bridge the Elbe and weave together the previously fragmented areas of Veddel and the southern Elbe islands into a cohesive new urban fabric. As a green-threaded peninsula between the Norderelbe and Moldauer Harbour, Grasbrook aspires to become a model neighbourhood and vital recreational hub. The district's defining feature is its expansive central park, anchored by a striking architectural canopy, with visual continuity toward the northwest along the Norderelbe. A generous waterfront promenade faces HafenCity, while a central plaza activates public life throughout the district. Completing this vision is a new bridge that finally links the long-isolated Veddel with the emerging Grasbrook community.
