Light Shapes Space

The building's design principles shaped the lighting strategy from the ground up

Light Creates Space

KörberHaus is an open gathering space welcoming all generations and cultures to Bergedorf. Its corporate identity and visual language take cues from the façade's distinctive slat system—an elegant expression of transparency and accessibility. These same design principles guided TeamLicht's lighting strategy. For this civic cultural hub, the team crafted a warm, welcoming lighting environment that encourages natural wayfinding. The approach centers on 3,000 K color temperature paired with exceptional color rendering and consistent illuminance levels throughout. A striking mobile of linear pendant fixtures—finished in copper to echo the façade's slats—commands the central atrium. This arrangement translates the façade's graphic rhythm into three-dimensional space. Refined, articulated recessed spotlights with two beam angles deliver ambient light across 3,000 K. Along the surrounding galleries, luminaires sit in two rows: the rear row maintains even spacing while spotlights sweep across the walls. This grazing light technique expands the visual field and frames the walls, allowing artwork to be showcased and changed easily. The fixtures follow an intentionally irregular pattern—a subtle reference to the façade's visual code. Throughout the design, clustered light points replace isolated fixtures, embodying the space's core message: encounter, community, and connection. The Lichtwarktheater represents another key dimension. Its lighting carefully balances atmosphere with function, supporting spatial perception, navigation, and architectural clarity. Flat-panel lights draw from the building's visual identity system. The comprehensive lighting scheme employs four strategies: linear wall lights, step lights, recessed wall washers for accent, and recessed downlights for base illumination, completed with soft-gradient linear wall washers. The lighting control system manages multiple scenarios for entry and events while integrating with the technical control room's DMX system, enabling seamless coordination between hall and event lighting.
