Beat the Heat
Slatted Roofs: The Smart Solution for Sun-Scorched Terraces
The owners of this spacious, modern detached home on a hillside in the Taunus region wanted to enhance their outdoor living experience. The challenge was clear: their terrace became unbearably hot on sunny days. A traditional glass roof was immediately ruled out—it would only trap more heat and stagnant air. So they began searching for an alternative, and found their answer with Güldener Metallbau.
The Bad Nauheim firm specializes in everything from awnings and conservatories to doors, windows, fences, and gates—including an impressive range of slatted roofs for terraces. For spaces prone to overheating, slatted roofs are ideal: warm air escapes upward through the open slats, maintaining a perfectly balanced climate. The continuously adjustable slats also give you full control over shade and sunlight whenever you need it. The team, led by managing director Stefan Güldener, selected the "Camargue" slatted roof by Renson for this project. Measuring 9.3 by 3.6 metres and anchored to the façade with supporting posts, it was finished in window-matching tones for the frame and posts, while the slats themselves echo the house's crisp white exterior. "The system is fully waterproof and wind-resistant, with an integrated rain sensor," Güldener notes. "But what really sets it apart is the sense of openness you get when those slats are open."
FixScreen vertical shading systems protect the front and both sides from intense low-angle sun, and their continuous side-guide design makes them remarkably wind-stable. A durable, low-maintenance fibreglass mesh completes the solution. Continuously dimmable LED lighting runs along both long support profiles, casting a warm glow across the space—especially inviting as evening settles in.
