Gold for the Post Palace in Budapest

Interior design and luminous accents command attention

Gold Transforms Budapest's Post Palace

Following its renovation, Budapest's Post Palace glows with renewed splendor inside and out. Golden accents throughout the building and interior spaces—paired with striking lighting installations—create a captivating visual experience. Originally constructed in 1924 as the headquarters of the Royal Hungarian Post, the magnificent red-brick structure suffered severe damage during World War II before becoming the home of the Hungarian National Bank. Today, it houses the national financial supervisory authority, consumer protection services, and a publicly accessible visitor center. The seven-story office building's lower north wing is dedicated to the Financial Museum and visitor facilities.

Architect Tihamér Szalay, longtime collaborator with Gyula Sándy, orchestrated the landmark's restoration. The building's iconic tower now welcomes the public as a viewing platform, accessed via a glass elevator that rises through the heart of the structure. Interactive exhibits guide visitors through economic concepts and processes. Where an imposing chimney once stood, a glass canopy suspended on a gilded steel frame now frames the central space, flooding the interior with natural light from above. The emphasis on gold throughout reflects the Hungarian National Bank's corporate identity—gold, white, and blue.

The Post Palace's lighting design—conceived by Solinfo Group / Lighting Embassy—weaves together an elegant array of Sattler luminaires to create a cohesive, luminous atmosphere. The effect is particularly striking given the pervasive gold finish throughout. The foyer announces this aesthetic with the Unione pendant, its special gold glaze delivering an immediate impact. The Toccata—a modern take on the classical chandelier—guides visitors onward as a captivating spiral light sculpture toward a refined seating area, where the Luce Verde Anelo ring luminaire adds elegance, its moss-green hue framed by circles of light.

Sattler's signature Circolo pendant makes a bold statement—a 2.6-metre diameter sculptural light fixture finished in elegant gold. Its design distils the essence of the circle: a geometric symbol of infinity, amplified by light's radiant power. In the conference area, the asymmetrically hung Paladio Prism pendant creates dynamic visual tension against the graphic gold wall treatment. A vertical sequence of Doppio luminaires reinforces this refined spatial language throughout. Every custom luminaire was crafted specifically for the Post Palace at Sattler's Göppingen factory, finished in exclusive gold.
