Glass Dome

A Cosmopolitan Penthouse Beyond Compare

Renowned for his daringly unconventional designs, American architect Daniel Liebeskind created "Sapphire" in 2017 near Berlin's central station—a building that epitomizes his signature aesthetic. Within the duplex penthouse spanning the 6th and 7th floors, right angles are virtually nonexistent. Interior designer Fabian Freytag and his Berlin-based studio faced an extraordinary challenge: bringing cohesive, sophisticated design to a space defined by dramatic angles and unexpected geometry—arguably one of the most demanding briefs an interior designer can undertake.

From conception to completion, this project spanned five years—including a pandemic-induced pause. The actual execution alone required twelve months to bring all custom elements and hand-crafted details to life. The square floor plan, with its multiple cantilevers and thoughtfully designed departures from strict geometry, encompasses two living levels of 337 m² each. Among its signature features is a "super-special sauna" (as Freytag affectionately calls it) perched on the roof terrace, dual kitchens—one indoor, one outdoor—and a carousel-style dressing room reminiscent of those found in upscale boutiques. Every material reflects uncompromising quality: eight varieties of natural stone grace the surfaces alone. Not a single washbasin is factory-produced; aside from upholstered pieces and chairs, every furnishing is a bespoke carpentry creation. Walnut paneling, laid diagonally, establishes the entrance's sophisticated character. The stairwell wall, sheathed in hand-hammered steel from floor to ceiling, casts ethereal, water-like light reflections throughout the space. Floorboards in a custom finish stretch up to 13 meters uninterrupted. At the heart of the residence, the lounge soars seven meters high, creating an overwhelming sense of openness. A fireplace wall anchors the space while a staircase ascends to both gallery and terrace. Two bedrooms occupy the rear, hidden behind substantial sliding doors—one features an en-suite master bath and carousel closet system; the other welcomes guests in style. This is refinement taken to its absolute limit.
