Standing on the wooded slopes of the Hardt in eastern Düsseldorf, above Bergische Landstraße, is one of Germany's most significant and technically complex new psychiatric facilities: the Diagnostic, Therapy and Research Centre (DTFZ). Designed by the Hattingen-based architects BDA RDS Partner, this landmark building now anchors the LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf's expanded campus. Spanning over 13,500 m² of usable floor space, the centre consolidates nursing wards offering standard and premium accommodations, day clinics, and comprehensive diagnostic and treatment facilities for general psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and neurology. The programme also includes laboratory facilities, advanced radiological diagnostics (MRI and CT), and multiple physical therapy services. The building comprises two U-shaped structures—four and five storeys respectively—unified by a transparent entrance hall with connecting bridges positioned directly along the Lindenallee, the hospital's principal urban spine. Horizontally articulated window bands and colour-tinted glass panels distinguish the care zones across both façades, while vertically structured base sections establish visual differentiation. This nuanced exterior language creates a legible identity both inside and out. The uppermost floors, housing the hospital's elective wards, float as glazed transparency. Every surface meets the rigorous passive house energy standard. Arranged around central courtyards, the naturally lit wards function as controlled, secure care environments when required. Two care units per level optimise operational efficiency. Healthcare architecture demands exceptional sensitivity—the built environment profoundly shapes patient recovery. The DTFZ embraces this responsibility through intentional interior design: a colour palette rooted in the site's mature lime tree canopy, complemented by warm wood tones, strategic accent colours, and generous natural light. Together, these elements foster a positive, harmonious atmosphere for patients, staff, and visitors alike. In this way, the new building eloquently affirms that the concept of "open psychiatry"—central to the hospital's founding vision—remains as vital and forward-thinking today as ever.
