Dynamic and Glamorous

The "Club '78" at Rheinenergiestadion sets the stage for unforgettable events

Two decades after its completion, Cologne's Rheinenergiestadion remains iconic—hosting the 2006 World Cup and serving as home to 1. FC Köln with a capacity of 50,000. Last year, the stadium unveiled a new event lounge: "Club '78," a masterful transformation by Cologne-based Gaarko Gablik Architektur. Converting a former, windowless press area, the design merges contemporary aesthetics with emotional depth and innovation, drawing inspiration from one of the most triumphant chapters in the club's history.

In 1978, under legendary coach Hennes Weisweiler, 1. FC Köln achieved a remarkable double: securing both the DFB Cup and the German Championship. This defining moment inspired both the lounge's name and its conceptual vision—to transform a formerly claustrophobic, windowless space into a vibrant hub of community and light, adaptable to diverse events year-round. The centerpiece is an innovative ceiling sculpture: over 200 individually programmable light panels that function like a dynamic skylight. Drawing from the explosive energy of a goal, this luminous installation captures the pulsing rhythm of the game, fusing acoustic effect with visual impact. The panels shift through colors and formations, adapting to every occasion—from electrifying match-day energy to the sophisticated glamour of a '70s-inspired evening. Anchoring the space is an elegant, gleaming black circular bar that organically connects all zones, its curved lines echoing throughout the thoughtfully arranged furnishings: high-top tables, intimate seating clusters, and banquette sections that encourage multiple forms of engagement. Angled supports and flowing curves in the black ceiling soften rigid geometry, inviting a warmer, more welcoming atmosphere. The understated wall palette deliberately recedes, allowing all focus to rest on the ceiling—the true soul of Club '78 and what makes it an unforgettable destination.
