Sustainable and Functional
Room in a Box creates modular furniture from corrugated cardboard
Gerald Dissen and Lionel Palm first crossed paths during their studies at Witten/Herdecke University. In 2013, while still students, they launched Room in a Box as their own startup in Berlin. Today, their studio in Lichtenberg produces modular cardboard furniture that stands out for its elegant simplicity and minimal environmental impact. Each piece is engineered with as few components as possible—all easily replaceable—making customization seamless. The result is remarkably stable and durable furniture that adapts to your needs.
Corrugated cardboard is composed of at least 70% recycled content and 30% virgin fiber sourced from sustainable forests—essential for the structural integrity furniture demands. All cardboard pieces are fully recyclable and reusable. Vegan starch adhesive binds the materials, while water-based, eco-friendly inks finish the surface. The material naturally regulates indoor humidity levels and its sound-dampening properties enhance room acoustics. The flagship of the Room in a Box collection is the expandable cardboard bed: its open diamond-lattice structure eliminates the need for a frame, delivering up to ten years of reliable performance. The range also encompasses various tables and work surfaces. For offices, the MonKey Desk attachment is a game-changer—convert any desk into an ergonomic standing workstation in seconds.
