Courtyard transformed into a green oasis
A new community centre anchors the heart of this Duisburg neighbourhood
Since 2016, Gebag Baugesellschaft Duisburg has been transforming the Grabenstraße, Akazienstraße, and Krautstraße neighbourhood in Duisburg. As part of the ongoing renovation—combining selective modernisation, strategic demolition, and new construction—landscape architects Danielzik Leuchter + Partner were commissioned to reimagine the approximately 4,500 m² courtyard. The result is anchored by a striking new community centre that serves as a vibrant gathering place. With its varied seating zones, dedicated bike parking, and generous southern exposure overlooking the verdant courtyard, this new focal point brings the neighbourhood together.
The design strategy preserved existing elements—from established pathways to the mature tree canopy—creating a strong foundation for the reimagined space. Along the south-west side of the community centre, a hedge-lined terrace with concrete seating opens directly onto a vibrant recreation zone featuring play equipment for all ages, a streetball court, and beyond that, accessible fitness stations for residents. A new circular pathway weaves through the courtyard, connecting thoughtfully designed zones. Distinct community terraces—each anchored by a uniquely flowering fruit tree—were added near residential entrances on Akazienstraße and Krautstraße, complete with barbecue areas for individual house communities. The western terrace benefits from a pergola for summer shade. Ground-floor residents enjoy hedge-protected private terraces and access to a perennial garden with raised-bed potential. A new gated entrance on Grabenstraße efficiently serves 17 parking spaces and seamlessly connects to covered bicycle storage integrated into the adjacent building. The courtyard's lighting design responds to its varied uses—with the community centre highlighted by mast and bollard fixtures. Sustainable water management is woven throughout: stormwater from hardscaped areas filters through bioswales, naturally recharging the groundwater. Visit on Architecture Day, June 18, to experience the space firsthand.
