Green and climate-friendly refuge created on sloping terrain

When designing a private garden in Hanau, we succeeded in creating a harmonious combination of the clients' wishes, the requirements of the plants and the architectural environment. In addition to a sloping terrain with an elongated area stretching over several houses, landscape architect Christian J. Wiegand from Büdingen also had to take into account the wishes of his clients, who wanted a low-maintenance, natural garden with rural charm. The client, who originally came from the Netherlands, chose white, red and blue as the preferred colours for the garden. The garden design also included traditional Dutch espalier lime trees, as well as a sauna and a pool, a large terrace, a berry garden, roses and hydrangeas.

Wiegand designed the paths and walls to be timelessly elegant, focusing primarily on high-quality, regional materials such as shell limestone and basalt lava. He achieved the ease of maintenance desired by the clients by taking into account the location requirements of the plants: in partially shaded areas, such as the front garden, there are therefore shrubs and a mixture of grasses. The sunny areas on the terrace, the front garden and the slope also feature lime trees, which serve as privacy screens. In the orchard, the landscape architect has combined various columnar fruit varieties with rowan trees. To ensure that the garden continues to display its colourful splendour in the following seasons, Wiegand chose trees with special autumn colours – climate-resistant trees that are resilient to heat and drought, such as the Persian ironwood tree and the sweetgum tree. Panicle hydrangeas and wild rose hedges, which also serve as a fence replacement in the front garden, provide white accents in the green oasis.

This created low-maintenance places of relaxation that give nature space and provide the builders with a wonderful retreat: "We now have a very beautiful garden and are delighted to have found the right designer in Christian Wiegand. He supported us greatly with his wealth of ideas and his intuition for our thoughts. Thanks to his professional and customer-oriented approach, he was able to solve even minor problems such as delivery difficulties due to COVID-19 and adjust the planning accordingly," say the owners, delighted with their new green retreat.
