For many, the desire for open space naturally leads to one dream: owning a home. Spacious living areas with flowing room transitions promise to fulfill that dream. When a family in Hürth approached the Pidoll architectural firm, they added one crucial requirement to the brief: alongside spaciousness, they wanted warmth and a sense of belonging. What once defined a home's primary purpose—a sanctuary that shelters and protects.

Situated on a generous plot bordered by quiet residential streets, the property's size alone opens countless design possibilities. Expansive windows oriented to different facades offer views into the neighborhood and surrounding landscape. The entrance—intentionally restrained—honors the family's need for privacy, while a subtle central window division hints at the spatial order within. On the garden side, this window line widens generously, with carefully recessed glazing creating a rhythm that defines the façade and generates unexpected moments of privacy. The parents' retreat upstairs and the kitchen loggia exemplify this approach, with the latter extending family life outdoors in an almost Mediterranean fashion during summer months. The upper floor is shared by parents and children, visually and spatially separated by a glass division. Yet the true heart of daily life unfolds on the ground floor: a generous open-plan living, cooking, and dining space that accommodates the entire family and their varied activities. A strategically positioned staircase and accompanying wall provide structure, guiding movement and sight lines toward the natural landscape that envelops the home. To marry such spaciousness with intimacy, the architects chose materials with intention. Rich oak flooring infuses the bright rooms with warmth and character. Thoughtful daylight is supplemented by a sophisticated lighting design that orchestrates the scale of the ground floor—creating distinct luminous zones that transform mood and function. The result: a space that feels both expansive and enveloping, with each family member discovering their own pocket of light and comfort.
