Seamless Transitions

A winter garden and open-plan living, kitchen, and dining space create exceptional livability

Bigger, wider, and more open—these were the clients' directives when they commissioned Stuttgart-based Beck Architektur to expand their ground-floor residence. The floor plan was completely reimagined, creating a generous living and dining area that flows naturally into the adjoining kitchen—now the modern, inviting heart of family life. A new winter garden on the building's southwest corner brings in abundant southern light and framed views of the garden beyond.

The extension reads as a natural continuation of the existing structure, both inside and out. Frameless glazing dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior spaces with elegant simplicity. The remaining rooms on the garden side retain their original character while benefiting from a fresh palette of colours and materials. What was once a conventional patio door now opens into a generous glass wall, flooding the conservatory with daylight and providing direct access to the garden. Continuous wooden flooring and high-quality wall finishes—achieved through careful Q3 plastering—tie the spaces together visually. The street-facing rooms were also reconfigured to optimize the layout. The former living and dining room now accommodates separate bedrooms for parents and children. Entering the apartment, visitors are greeted by a bright hallway painted in soft, welcoming tones. Flush-mounted doors almost disappear into the walls, creating a clear distinction between private retreat spaces and open living zones. The eye is naturally drawn from the entry through the opened living room wall and directly into the living and dining area. The conservatory extension spans from the original house wall to the garden wall—which supports the sloping terrain and creates a level terrace at the addition's edge. The angled garden wall subtly supports the glass front while doubling as a built-in bench within the dining space, seamlessly integrating structure and function. The open kitchen maintains its original footprint but commands attention through its bold, dark colour scheme. The bathroom, too, remains unchanged in size but has been redesigned for enhanced efficiency and flow. A sophisticated lighting design with indirect illumination transforms the compact bathtub into an evening retreat—a small wellness sanctuary within the home.
